The ABCs of 2nd Grade
(A Guide to 2nd grade Policies and Procedures)
Attendance
Learning and fun take place every day! Please make sure your child comes to school every day on time. If your child is absent from school, please call the nurse at 847-966-9280 ext. 1118. That way we will know that your child will not be coming to school. Students who arrive after 8:00 will have to go to the office and be signed in by a parent and will receive a tardy pass to enter class.
Book Baggies
Second graders will be assigned books for their book baggies from their guided reading teachers on a daily basis from Monday thru Thursday. Students who do not meet with their guided reading group on a daily basis can choose a book at their level that is approved by their homeroom teacher.
Behavior chart
Our classroom has five rules.1. Be kind to each other. 2. Be honest and helpful to each other. 3. Raise your hand when you have a question or something to share. 4. Listen when others are speaking. 5.Try your best. In addition, the class as a whole can earn “stars” for good behavior or compliments from other teachers. When we fill the star chart with tickets-the class can earn an agreed-upon reward. Paws are awarded individually for being safe, respectful, or responsible and having a “pawsitive” attitude.
Communication
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me and I will be happy to help. You can call into the classroom at 847-966-9280 ext. 1150 before 8:00 a.m. and after 3:00 PM. If you need to get a hold of me during the day, call at 9:10-9:30 or 12:15-12:35 M, T, Th, F. On Wednesdays you can contact me at 9:35-9:55 and 12:30-12:50. You can also email me at [email protected] I will get back to within a school day/24 hours.
Conferences
Conferences are scheduled twice a year. You can sign up for a conference time on the Culver website--http://www.niles71.org/ under the Parents tab. There will be a parent-teacher conference tab to click. The service will be available closer to the time of conferences (Wed. Nov. 20, 2018). If you want to meet during another part of the school year, please phone, email, or send a note.
Dismissal
School ends at 3:00 PM on full school days and at 11:30 AM on early dismissal days. Please send a note if your child will be dismissed at a different time or is to go home a different way than his/her normal routine.
Emergencies
The school may need to contact you in case of an emergency. Please make sure we have the correct emergency numbers and information on file for your child.
Ear buds/Headphones
Each student is required to have his/her own set of ear buds/headphones for use with ipads.
Field Trips
Our class will go on two field trips this year. Permission slips must be signed and returned with any money for your child to attend.
Grades
Primary students do not receive letter grades. They are working on achieving second grade standards. When you view your child's Report Card, he or she will be marked as E-Excellent, S-Satisfactory, and N-Needs Improvement. Your child will receive quarterly report cards throughout the school year.
Homework
Your child will have homework Monday through Thursday. He/she will bring it home in their Home Folder. All assignments are due the next day, unless otherwise stated. Your child is also encouraged to read for at least twenty minutes nightly.
Home folder
This is where you will find homework, permission slips, school work, and notes from school. The Home Folder is also a great way for you to send notes to school. We would also appreciate the cleaning out of the Home Folder regularly.
Ipads
Second grade students will be assigned their own ipad for the year. We will use the ipads to practice skills, create videos and artwork, and take photos to document experiments and projects.
Job Well Done
Please encourage your child to exhibit good behavior and to always do his or her best.
Kindness
We will learn to be kind to ourselves and others every day! This includes actions as well as words. It is the first rule in our classroom.
Lunch
Students have the option to purchase a school lunch or bring a lunch from home. Lunch menus are on the Niles 71 website at the beginning of each month. This year we begin with recess from 10:43 a.m to 11:03 a.m (M, T, Th, F) and 10:58-11:18 a.m. on Wednesdays. Our lunch time is from 11:03-11:25 a.m (M, T, Th, F) and 11:08-11:40 a.m on Wednesdays.
Math Expressions
Math Expressions incorporates the best practices of both traditional and reform mathematics curricula. The program strikes a balance between promoting children's natural solution methods and introducing effective procedures.
Math Expressions focuses on two main core concepts: number concepts and an algebraic approach to word problems.
Second graders work on breaking multi-digit numbers into ones and groups of tens, hundreds, and thousands. This activity helps their understanding of multi-digit addition and subtraction as well as solving word problems. Second graders will also work on seeing the repeated groups within numbers, and this awareness helps them to master multiplication and division.
News
Important notices will be sent home periodically or posted on our 2nd Grade Weebly which is on the Niles 71 Website under Students-Grade Level Websites. Please check your child's Home Folder for important papers every night.
Organization
Good organizational habits begin to form in second grade. Help your child stay organized with his or her school work.
Practice
Just like any other thing you expect to be good at, the skills learned in school need to be practiced. Please provide time at home for your child to practice his or her math facts and reading in a quiet place.
Questions or Concerns
Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns. The best way to contact me is through email ([email protected]).

Snack
Your child may bring a snack to school to be eaten during snack time. We ask that the food be healthy and nut-free.
Talking

Technology
This year students will be going to a technology class once a week. Children will be learning about how to use technology, staying safe online and different learning resources. Second graders will also begin using the chromebooks in second grade.
Unique
I believe that each child has unique learning differences; therefore I will be providing instruction to your child that may be different than his or her peers.
Volunteers
Parents, Grandparents, Aunts, and Uncles are welcome to our school to volunteer. They must complete the volunteer training to be able to participate on field trips or special activities in the classroom. You can find out more information on volunteer training on the Culver website under the volunteer tab.
Writing
Reading and writing are closely linked. This year your child will be writing expository essays, narrative stories, friendly letters, and persuasive writing. We will be trying hard to learn about the correct uses of punctuation and grammar as well.
